Autism Awareness Day

LIGHT IT UP BLUE!
If you asked me how much this day meant to me a couple of years ago, I probably would have said it isn't as significant as some other days but that has all changed now.

About two years ago, I was blessed to have someone with Autism enter my life. To say he changed my life would be an understatement. Wayne is a bubbly, enthusiastic and loving (and there can be so many other words to describe him) individual. When he came into my life there was an instant connection. He has so much enthusiasm for life and brings so much to my life.

I always supported Wayne. I supported him one day by going to a community program that he went to on a weekly basis. Little did I know that this program was going to change my life. Literally. I fell in love with the organization and what it does for these individuals with Autism (and other special needs) and their families.

By becoming more involved with the organization and attending more programs with Wayne, I got a position with the organization that has now become so much more than I ever imagined.

I never had an interest in working with individuals with special needs. And I now work with youth/young adults with Autism (and other special needs). It has changed my life, my goals and more importantly, who I am as a person. To work with these individuals that I am blessed to work with is a challenge but the most rewarding job I have ever done.

Autism Awareness Day is about supporting those who have autism and their families. Its to raise awareness and support research.

If you didn't get a chance to rock your BLUE today and support, do it next year! But if there is only thing you take away from this blog, please remember that "Autism is not a disease, it is a different way of life that we need to learn more about."

This blog is dedicated to Wayne and to all the individuals that I get to work with. Thank you for blessing my life with your presence.
