"Living with integrity means: Not settling for less than what you know you deserve in your relationships. Asking for what you want and need from others. Speaking your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. Behaving in ways that are in harmony with your personal values. Making choices based on what you believe, and not what others believe."
This quote is such a great inspiration. Integrity is a character trait that most individuals want to have. When I read this quote for the first time, it was so overwhelming but I knew it was important for me to understand it. I read each partly separately and explained it to myself to better understand. I broke it up into four different parts to better understand. Here it is for you all to read.
1. "Not settling for less than what you know you deserve in your relationships. Asking for what you want and need from others."
As individuals we set standards for our jobs and ourselves but I think it's crucial that we set standards for our relationships. Whether they are family members, friends or a significant other. When we make clear what we are asking for and what we need, we don't hide anything. Nothing falls between the cracks. - This allows us to be true to ourselves and in return we are being true to those whom we have these relationships with as well.
2. "Speaking your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension."
Many times people don't want conflict and tension in their relationships and their lives and I'm completely in agreement with that. Tension makes for unnecessary stress and mental exhaustion. However, when you're speaking the truth, your truth, you will hurt some people and their feelings and you will create tension or conflict. - If we could live lives that didn't involve conflict or tension, it would be too perfect. It wouldn't create individuals with character. Iit's not a great feeling to be the one who creates conflict but having integrity means being honest to yourself. Speak your truth.
3. "Behaving in ways that are in harmony with your personal values."
This part, along with the last part of the quote are the most important parts for me. Every single one of us is unique and that's what creates different values and morals. - Behaving in ways that are good for you is important to do. As much as people want to criticize, no one knows what your personal values and morals are and therefore, they can't see what you are thinking. And that's okay.
4. "Making choices based on what you believe, and not what others believe."
This last part goes perfectly with the third part of the quote. Doing what you feel is right. - Everyone will always have their own beliefs, another reason why we are all different BUT having integrity is doing what is right for you. What you believe in. Sometimes it may be the bad choice but until you do it, you won't know if it was or wasn't.
There's another important piece I want to add to this. Integrity is also "owning what you've done." We all want to own up to the great things we do but rarely do we want to stand up for what we did wrong. Integrity is being able to own up to the right AND the wrong. It's essential to make sure we own up to the wrong because that creates character and shows others that we are all vulnerable individuals.
Everyone makes mistakes. It happens every day but being able to stand by your decisions, speak your truth and being able to own your decisions and mistakes is what integrity is all about.
