Interview Etiquette 101

I've spent the last two weeks conducting interviews and the last 10 years going through interviews myself. Interviews are something everyone experiences regularly but many forget the basics when it comes to interviews. I'm hoping that by writing this blog, people read and gain some knowledge as to help themselves prep for a future interview.

TIPS??

I've got an inside scoop on what employers are looking for, what to wear, how to behave and more. Interview Etiquette 101 starts now...

1. Be confident in yourself. If you believe in yourself, then the person(s) interviewing you will also believe in you and what you are saying. Note: please don't chew gum, your nails or play with your hair.

2. When applying for a specific position or organization, study for it. Generally it's a good idea to know about an organization so you can answer specific questions if you are asked or you can use the knowledge to impress them when speaking during the interview.

3. Ensure that you read emails or documents sent to you ahead of time properly. If they are sending you an email or information, it probably is important and requires your attention. Also, bring documents that they ask for. They're probably not suggesting that you bring it.

4. Create a portfolio. This is such a great idea because in a short span of time. the person(s) interviewing you can get a glimpse of who you are, what you have done in the past and the kind of work you are capable of. Side note: this is a great place to have originals and photocopies of all your documents (e.g. diplomas/degrees, certifications, etc).

5. Dress appropriately. Ensure that you dress for the position which you applied for, or the field. If you are applying to a position in the Financial District, jeans won't cut it. Make sure you look presentable. An organization wants to see if you are able to represent them; appearance makes the first impression.

Those are my top five tips to ensure that you make a great first impression and that you have a successful interview.
